Momentum succesfully completes the worlds first repowering of Swedish offshore project

Danish-based Momentum Gruppen A/S successfully completes the world’s first repowering of an offshore wind turbine project off the coast of the island of Gotland, Sweden.

The asset management company, Momentum Gruppen A/S, based in Roskilde, Denmark, has recently finished the completion of a repowering project 4 km off the coast of the Swedish island of Gotland.

The five turbines were re-commissioned on November 23, 2018, after undergoing an extensive technological and mechanical upgrade.

The project included the replacement of the nacelles, the blades and the control systems of five worn-out 500 kW WindWorld turbines from 1998, one of the world’s earliest offshore projects. These parts were replaced by newly refurbished parts from five Vestas V47-600 kW.

The towers, the foundations and the sea cables passed an extensive durability test and are therefore reused.

The consequence of the exchange is the prolongation of the turbine’s technical lifetime of +15 years and more than a doubling of the expected yearly output from ca. 5.000 MWh. to ca. 11.000 MWh.

Kim Madsen, the CEO of Momentum Gruppen A/S, states: ”With the completion of this project, Momentum has proven that we can assist the owners of older turbines with the extension of the lifetime of their assets, also under as difficult circumstances as offshore.

We were responsible for the complete control of each process from procurement of the V47 turbines, to the refurbishment of nacelles and main components to the delivery and installation of the renovated turbines, and the disposal of the old parts.

The project is a result of listening to and complying with the asset owners who today expect and demand that their asset manager can take care of all processes of the life cycle of a green energy project, which in turn improves the returns on their investment.”

The project proves that a complete recycling and refurbishment of older turbines in many cases is the best, and often the only, solution for older turbines due to different factors like limited net capacity, height restrictions, worn-out mechanical parts etc.

Consequently, Momentum Gruppen A/S expect that the asset owners demand for similar solutions will rise in the future for cases in which the installation of new and larger turbines is impossible.

Momentum Gruppen A/S has already taken on the next project in Sweden with similar characteristics. Here due to height restrictions in the area the most profitable solution is to install used but refurbished turbines in the MW class.
